Lakes & Beaches

There are four lakes in Eaglehead. These lakes are for the exclusive use and enjoyment of Members and their guests.

Lake Linganore

The largest of the lakes is Lake Linganore, which is approximately 209-acres with 13 miles of shoreline. This lake has two beaches, one located in the Coldstream Village on the northern shoreline, and the other located in the Nightingale Village on the southern shoreline. The lake was created by impounding the waters of Linganore Creek and Ben’s Branch with the Brosius Dam, named for the father of the original community developers.  Permission to create the lake was granted only with the condition that the community never impedes the flow of the water of Linganore Creek because historically it has been a major source of drinking water for the nearby City of Frederick since the early 20th century. Snow melts and heavy spring rains cause much of the sand at the beaches to be washed away, so every year about mid-May new sand is placed on the beaches, depending upon weather trends. The lake is 50-feet at its deepest spot.

Lake Merle

Lake Merle is located in the Meadows village.

Lake Anita Louise

Lake Anita Louise is located in the Pinehurst village. This lake does not have a beach but does have a dock from which fishermen can try their hand at catching some of the small and large-mouth bass, crappie and blue gill that live in the lake.

Lake Marion

Lake Marion is located along Eaglehead Drive heading toward the Woodridge village. This lake does not have a beach or a dock but there is a trail that circles a portion of the shoreline and allows for fishing.

Maryland Boat Regulations

The lake water in Linganore is regulated by the State of Maryland. Please note that DNR has the right to monitor activity on Lake Linganore and will enforce state rules and regulations. Please click here to learn about Maryland’s boating regulations.

Lake Linganore has two private beaches for the exclusive use and enjoyment of its Members. All members must be in good standing and have their Member ID’s with them at all times to avoid being asked to leave the beach. All items must be removed from the beaches daily. Tents or other items may not be left overnight to “stake out” territory.

Leashed pets are allowed on the beaches during regular amenity hours year round; however, pets are not allowed on the beaches between of 7 am and 7 pm Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Fires and fireworks are not permitted. Please do not bring any glass products to the beaches. Glass bottles, platters and other breakable items become dangerously concealed in the sand.

Beach Parking

There are limited parking spaces available at the beaches and are on a first come first serve basis for Members only.

Picnic & Tot Lots

There are several locations throughout the community. You can view the amenities map for locations (found on the home page).

The Linganore Trail System

A 20 mile trail system is located throughout the community. Trails are a combination of wooded and lakeside trails, asphalt and concrete pathways, wooden bridges and steps, tunnels and one esplanade. Trails are periodically marked with green posts with a gold community logo. Volunteers (especially the Trailblazers Committee) and Staff work together to keep trails clear of debris and encroaching vegetation.

If you notice an area in need of service, please contact your Village Manager so that we may inspect the area.

The Trail map is available here or in the LLA office.

Balmoral-Indian Caves Nature Trail

In December of 2014, Thomas Salamon (Troop #628) wrapped up his Eagle Scout Project. He led a project to transform an existing section of the Indian Caves Trail from Balmoral Ridge down to the Indian Caves into an informative nature walk. With the help of his fellow troop members, leaders and family, twelve numbered posts were installed at points of interest (indicating specific trees, birds indigenous to the area, and the Indian Caves). Thomas then created a brochure that gives a brief description of each numbered object.

Forever Foundation Trail Guide

Boy Scout, Duncan Slade (Troop 1998) created a Nature Trail Guide for the Forever Foundation. The .4 mile trail-break leading to the Forever Foundation is found approximately midway through the Balmoral Trail (Trail 3 on the Lake Linganore Trail Map). There is also a QR code on the first post along the trail for Members to scan and access the trail guide on their phone or tablet.
