Water Quality Update: June 2013

by Neal Spungen

The Water Quality Committee started testing for algae producing nutrients at three sites on the lake in late May. Volunteers took samples at Linganore Creek, Ben’s Branch, and Indian Caves. The samples will be processed by Hood College. The test results will help us better understand the sources of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphates. We will also be testing the water velocity and turbidity to better understand the presence of nutrients in the water.

E. coli testing has been taking place weekly at Nightingale and Coldstream beach since the beginning of March. The good news is that most of of the results have been below the Maryland safe swimming standards. Through additional research, committee members have been able to determine that increased E. Coli levels seem to follow periods of precipitation. The frequency of testing will increase to daily from the end of May to the end of August. Test results are available on the LLA website: Committees > Friends of the Lake > Test Results
