Deer Population Survey

The deer population within Lake Linganore Association is an ongoing discussion. During Resident Forum at the November 6, 2017, Board of Directors (BoD) meeting, a Member inquired about the 2016 proposed culling of the deer population. BoD President, Brandon Frazier, explained that in light of negative feedback from some Members, the Board felt further analysis should be done prior to taking any action. Unfortunately, the window to conduct such analysis is limited. So, the study and any recommended steps had to be pushed to a future timeframe.

We have now reached that window. A formal Deer Population Survey will be conducted Tuesday, February 20 and Wednesday, February 21.  LLA Operations Manager, Brett Hamilton, was tasked with heading the project. Hamilton reached out to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the MD DNR.

The USDA recommended two companies, including Environmental Systems Analysis, Inc. (ESA), which could successfully perform the type of survey required by the Association. The competing organizations submitted bids, and ESA was selected based on their price and technique.

ESA will provide reliable information on the deer density within the Association and deliver recommendations. The Ground-Based Forward Looking Infrared Radiometer (FLIR) Deer Population Survey is a census performed within a sample area of the Association. The survey will count deer using a night vision thermal imaging camera, gather data from the counts, and input collected data into a distance sampling equation program to retrieve population characteristics. The survey results will provide the Association an estimated amount of deer per square mile.

ESA personnel will survey through residential roadways from approximately 7:30 pm to 1:30 am over the two-night period. The FLIR camera will see into the woods from both sides of the ESA vehicle as it drives in 1/10th –mile increments of ten, one-mile transects to complete the study.

After the study analysis is complete, ESA will prepare a comprehensive report including the study results and recommendations for the Association to take into consideration. Results of ESA’s upcoming Deer Population Survey will be published for members to review.
